Ambassador to Diabetes Education- Halle Berry

n 2004, she became the first national ambassador of the National Diabetes Education - Diabetes Aware Campaign, in America.

It's not always easy

She hasn’t always found it easy to manage her diabetes: “Sometimes, in the middle of a workday, it can be a little inconvenient to say ‘I have to go shoot up [with insulin]. Can you excuse me please?’.

"I used to think in the beginning, ‘oh, they’re going to think I’m a prima donna,’ but I got over that saying ‘this is life’.”

A different view of diabetes

But now she manages it so well that she thinks of diabetes rather differently: "My teacher told me at the age of 10 that when I grew up, I was going to be given a gift. Diabetes turned out to be it. It gave me the strength and toughness I needed for my life."

More than just a pretty face

There’s no denying her beauty and as well as winning numerous beauty contests, she has long been the face of Revlon cosmetics and has recently become the face of Versace.

Her looks have not always bought her good fortune though. With a black father and white mother, the young Halle experienced racism from other children, both black and white.

What’s new?

Halle has not always been lucky in love but she has recently hit the jackpot.

She has been dating supermodel Gabriel Aubry, who is nine years her junior, since November 2005, when they met at a Versace photoshoot (how we all meet our boyfriends and girlfriends!).

Berry confirmed in September 2007 that she was three months pregnant with Aubry's baby.

Favourite food

Grilled tuna and garlic mash potato.

Favourite ‘treat eat’

Salt and vinegar crisps.

Take Control says Lucy Davis

Take control

"When you are first diagnosed with diabetes it can seem overwhelming and frightening. It could seem easier to bury your head in the sand and hope it will go away.

"But I think the most important thing to remember is that you must be in control of your diabetes and not the other way around.

Don't let it define you

"I’ve known people who allow their difficulties in life to define them. They say 'Why me?'. But I have to say to myself 'Why not me?'. Many people deal with difficult challenges every day of their lives, and we are lucky that we have medicines and technology available to us that others didn’t many years ago.

Plan ahead

"One adjustment that I found hard at first was always having to plan ahead - Where was I going to be that day? What food would be available? Did I have all the insulin I needed? Did I have spare glucose tablets with me? (one of the most important I think). But after a very short time this became second nature, like remembering to take my purse out with me or my keys.

Live your life

"Many things come along in everyone’s lives to test us. What makes us stand out from the crowd is how we deal with them. Diabetes can be as easy or as difficult as we make it. And by controlling it and keeping ourselves healthy, we can help prevent the side-effects of diabetes later in life.

"Be vigilant about your health and your medications. Don’t let yourself view it as a chore. Then go out and live your life, and grasp your dreams with both hands."

Reduce Stress

Reduce stress

I have found that having excess stress is a heavy toll on my life for me. After many advice and caution, have taken doctor's advice to quit my job. I did it.

Now after 7 years I can say being less stressful and happy.

Stress is difficult for scientists to define because it is a subjective sensation associated with varied symptoms that differ for each of us. In addition, stress is not always a synonym for distress. Situations like a steep roller coaster ride that cause fear and anxiety for some can prove highly pleasurable for others. Winning a race or election may be more stressful than losing but this is good stress.

Increased stress increases productivity – up to a point, after which things rapidly deteriorate, and that level also differs for each of us. It’s much like the stress or tension on a violin string. Not enough produces a dull raspy sound and too much an irritating screech or snaps the string – but just the correct degree of stress creates a beautiful tone.
Similarly, we all have to find the right amount of stress that permits us to make pleasant music in our daily lives. You can learn how to utilize and transform stress so that it will make you more productive and less self-destructive.
